Card with Accessories

One of the biggest trends in card design is accessorizing the announcement or invitation with lavish embellishments such as wraps, bands, bows, and die-cuts.

Wrap - The wrap is a piece of paper, usually vellum or handmade, folded around the entire main invitation or announcement card and is sometimes held together with ribbon or a seal. For wedding invitations, it can replace the traditional inner envelope for holding the invitation and enclosures together. While most of the event information is printed on the announcement or invitation card, names and dates may be printed on the front folds of the wrap.

Band - The band is typically a strip of paper placed around the invitation or announcement. It can be secured with a piece of double-sided tape, an adhesive dot, a sticker, or a wax seal. A band can hold a gatefold card closed or keep a wrap in place around the card. Although usually made of paper, the band can be fashioned out of any combination of material. It might be a length of fabric cord, a velvet ribbon, a fabric belt with a buckle, a grosgrain ribbon, a silver chain, a colorful beaded cord, or just about any embellishment you can think of.

Bow - The bow, usually made of chiffon or satin, is used to fasten a vellum overlay or wrap or it could be used alone as a purely decorative feature. It can be secured to the announcement or invitation card with adhesive or threaded into a hole punched into the card and tied into a bow.

Die-cut - Die-cut is a process of cutting special slits and holes into a paper. The word "die-cut" can also refer to the shapes - not just the voids - that are cut out and attached to a card for decorative purposes. Die-cut shapes are often used to add dimension and flare to the traditional flat card and, at the same time, convey a less formal atmosphere to an event. For example, instead of printing a motif directly onto a card, the motif can be printed onto another piece of card stock, cut out, and attached onto the actual announcement or invitation card with an adhesive dot. Or for a less boxy look, the card itself can be die-cut around the perimeter to form various sculpted edges.
